Influence of Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) on Properties of Metals in Ultrasonic Metal Welding
Jul 11,2026
Ultrasonic metal welders are widely used in precision metal joining due to low-temperature performance, filler-free welding and environmental friendliness with high efficiency. Different from fusion welding, their heat-affected zones are extremely narrow, yet they still exert certain impacts on metal performance. Improper control will lead to reduced joint strength and unstable material properties.

1. Core Characteristics of HAZ in Ultrasonic Welding
The heat-affected zone refers to the metal area affected by heat generated from high-frequency vibration during welding. Its core features: narrow range, low temperature, mild microstructure changes, far superior to traditional fusion welding.
2. Specific Impacts of HAZ on Metal Material Properties
(1) Impact on Mechanical Strength
1.With properly controlled welding parameters, HAZ helps strengthen welding joints and achieve tighter bonding between weld and base metal, lifting overall load-bearing capacity.
2.Improper parameters expand the HAZ, making metals brittle and triggering cracks & detachment at joints, threatening service safety.
(2) Impacts on Practical Performance
1.Electrical conductivity: HAZ slightly reduces metal conductivity, which may lower current transmission efficiency.
2.Corrosion resistance: HAZ destroys the passivation film on metal surfaces, weakening corrosion resistance and prone to oxidation & rust.
3.Other properties: Uneven element distribution occurs in some metals within HAZ, destabilizing material performance.
3. Key Measures to Mitigate Adverse Effects of HAZ
1.Optimize welding parameters to control amplitude, pressure and welding time and avoid excessive heat input.
2.Optimize fixture design to realize uniform heat transfer and local overheating reduction.
3.Strengthen post-weld cooling and pressure holding to prevent further deterioration of HAZ microstructure.
4.Regularly test microstructure and properties of HAZ, adjust process parameters promptly if needed.
