What Effects Do Silver Slag on the Welding Electrode of the Silver-Contact Automatic Welding Machine Have on Weld Spots?
Oct 14,2026
When silver contacts are welded on the silver-contact automatic welding machine, the molten splashed silver alloy adheres and accumulates on the electrode end face, forming silver-slag residue. Silver slag is conductive foreign matter that changes the electrode contact state and current distribution, causing various weld-spot defects and accelerating electrode wear.

I Weld-Spot Hazards Caused by Silver Slag on the Electrode
1.Weld-spot appearance defects appear, producing pitting, pits, and indentations; silver slag also transfers to the workpiece surface, forming excess metal particles and causing contact pressing deformation.
2.Welding strength is unstable; silver slag causes local current concentration, making local overburning and cold joints easy.
3.Contact offset easily occurs; when caked silver slag is pressed down, lateral friction is generated, pushing the silver contact to shift and causing eccentric welding.
4.Electrical performance deteriorates; weld spots easily incorporate silver-slag inclusions, finished-product contact resistance fluctuates greatly, and the product easily heats up during operation.
5.Spatter keeps increasing, forming a vicious cycle; residual silver slag re-heats and melts, continuously generating new spatter, and residue accumulates more and more.
II Main Causes of Silver Slag on the Electrode Surface
1.Excessive heat during the welding process; after the silver contact melts, it produces much spatter, and molten silver material cools and adheres to the electrode surface.
2.Oil and oxide layers on the silver-contact workpiece surface aggravate welding spatter and accelerate silver-slag adhesion.
3.Unreasonable welding-pressure adjustment squeezes out molten silver material, increasing residue generation.
4.The electrode is not cleaned and maintained regularly, and small amounts of residue keep accumulating; the electrode cooling effect is poor, the working-face temperature is high, and silver material easily sticks.
5.The workstation lacks protection; splashed silver chips cannot be removed in time and fall onto the electrode surface.
III Key Points for Improvement, Prevention, and Control
1.Optimize the welding process to reduce silver-slag generation at the source
2.Implement electrode maintenance
3.Optimize workstation protection of the equipment
4.Do good incoming-material quality control
