What is diffusion welding? [DW01]

Diffusion welding, or diffusion bonding, is a kind of solid-state joining method which uses indirect heat energy as energy source. It can make the surface of welding parts produce small plastic deformation under certain temperature and pressure, and realize large area close contact. The metallurgical bonding of the weldments is realized by the mutual diffusion of atoms between the contact surfaces and the interface migration. Diffusion welding is regarded as a high precision joining technique, also referred to as diffusion bonding.

Features of Diffusion Welding

1. Diffusion welding has high welding strength and little or no welding deformation, and has almost no harmful effect on the properties of the materials to be welded.

2. Weldable materials are widely used. It is suitable for joining materials in the forms of large plates and/or cylinders, and for bonding dissimilar materials, metallic and nonmetallic materials, ceramics, intermetallic compounds, amorphous alloys, and single crystal alloys.

In particular, diffusion welding or diffusion bonding is used to weld titanium, zirconium and beryllium metals and its alloy,

to weld nickel alloy like Inconel, Wrought Udimet etc.

to weld dissimilar metals like Cu to Ti, Cu to Al etc.

3. Diffusion welding can be used to weld complex structures and workpieces with great differences in thickness.

4. The main process variables of diffusion welding include temperature, time, pressure, protective atmosphere, specimen surface condition, and interlayer selection. These variables are interrelated, and as a result, all factors should be taken into account when determining the diffusion welding parameters for a specific application. In addition, the selection of interlayer materials needs to be carefully considered when an interlayer is required in diffusion welding.
