Why Do Products Welded by the Dedicated Welding Machine for Automotive Seat Frames Show Weld Offset?

Nov 07,2026

When the dedicated welding machine for automotive seat frames welds seat frames, weld offset is a fairly common defect; the causes involve incoming material, locating and clamping, the machine tooling, welding parameters and equipment condition.

I. Incoming Material and Placement Factors

1. Cutting dimension deviation, stamping springback or distortion leave parts out of position, so the weld spot deviates after clamping.

2. Burrs, flash, oil or foreign matter on the overlap surface prevent a solid fit and the parts shift under pressure; misalignment in multi-layer stacking or insufficient overlap width makes the weld spot fall on the edge or in mid-air.

3. Poor batch-to-batch consistency of incoming material causes some products to be mispositioned when welded with a fixed program.

II. Locating and Clamping Factors

1. Locating pins and blocks are worn or loose, the fit clearance grows, and the parts have play.

2. Clamping force is insufficient or clamping points are poorly distributed, so parts are not fully pressed and shift under thermal deformation and electrode pressure.

3. Weld slag and spatter accumulate on the fixture, making it hard for parts to seat; welding is started before the part is properly placed.

III. Tooling and Equipment Condition Factors

1. Tooling is deformed or loose, so the locating datum shifts; the positioner does not return to zero accurately or repeat positioning accuracy drops, causing accumulated errors at multiple stations.

2. Electrode tips are worn, dressed asymmetrically or poorly aligned; program coordinates drift and teaching points are not calibrated regularly.

3. Pressure heads and electrodes have parallelism deviation, so pressure output is uneven.

IV. Parameters and Process Sequence Factors

1. Current is too high and current-on time too long, so excessive heat input causes thermal deformation.

2. The welding sequence is unreasonable: shrinkage of earlier welds pulls later weld spots out of position.

3. Pressing and current-on timing are poorly matched, with current applied before full pressing; pressure is released too early during cooling, so the hot workpiece loses its restraint.

V. Improvement and Solutions

1. Strengthen incoming inspection, control dimensional tolerance and overlap surface quality, and clean burrs, oil and foreign matter.

2. Regularly check and replace worn locating pins and blocks, and clean weld slag and spatter from the fixture.

3. Optimise the clamping scheme by adding clamping points and increasing clamping force to reduce shifting during welding.

4. Regularly correct program coordinates and teaching points, check positioner repeat positioning accuracy, and dress electrodes regularly.

5. Set welding current, current-on time and welding sequence reasonably, and use symmetrical, stepped welding to reduce thermal deformation.

6. Standardise the operating procedure: start welding only after confirming the part is properly placed, and perform first-piece inspection and in-process sampling.
