The Difference Between Welding Flange Nuts on Galvanized Sheet and Carbon Steel Sheet with a Capacitor Energy-Storage Spot Welder

When welding flange nuts with a capacitor energy-storage spot welder, carbon steel sheet and galvanized sheet differ significantly in welding mechanism, process, defects, and maintenance.
I Differences in Base-Material Surface Characteristics
Carbon steel sheet: stable contact resistance, uniform current conduction, and little interference at the welding interface.
Galvanized sheet: the surface carries a zinc protective layer; zinc has a low melting point and easily melts and vaporizes when heated, changing the contact-surface resistance and interfering with the fusion of the nut projection ring.
II Differences in Common Welding Defects
Carbon steel sheet: the main defects are insufficient fusion of the projection ring, nut skewing, and overly deep sheet indentations, with few spatters.
Galvanized sheet: zinc-slag spatter, weld-spot porosity, and cold joints easily occur; residue easily sticks inside the nut threads, affecting assembly, and the coating at the weld-spot position is burned and damaged.
III Differences in Electrode Wear and Maintenance
Carbon steel sheet: the electrode end face is not easy to stick with impurities
Galvanized sheet: molten zinc easily adheres to the electrode end face, affecting conduction stability, and electrode wear is faster
IV Differences in Pre-Welding Pretreatment Requirements
Carbon steel sheet: clean oil and thick floating rust.
Galvanized sheet: clean oil in the welding area; oil aggravates zinc-layer spatter.
